Agriculture in Wellington – 1950s
In 1953, Bink formed Acme Drainage District and started to drain much of the swamp land.
A series of canals were built to help control water flow, flood control, and provide transportation by boat. Do any of you live on or near a canal? These are all manmade canals.
In those early days, Wellington (which was not yet called Wellington,) was all farmland full of mostly strawberry fields, Spanish Moss, and wild orchids. Since there was so much farming going on, they needed a name for the area, so they decided to call it Flying COW Ranch.
COW stands for Charles Oliver Wellington (COW).
